| The Government has shunned
the advice of the independent Electoral Commission on all-postal ballots
for this year’s local council and European Parliament elections the Chair
of the North West Liberal Democrats said today (January 23rd, 2004).
In a written statement from the Department for Constitutional Affairs, the Government announced it would pilot schemes in two regions not recommended by the Electoral Commission – the North West and Yorkshire & the Humber. Cllr Dave Smithson, Chair of the North West Liberal Democrats, said: "It would appear that yet another conversation has been a waste of time, this announcement shows that Labour is prepared to rip up the advice of independent experts when it suits their electoral convenience. "The all-postal ballots will
be a recipe for confusion in the North West. It looks to me as if this
is nothing more than a desperate measure to save Labour's skin in the European
and local elections."
